IP rating in equipment records

IP rating is an ingress protection code used in Australian equipment records to describe protection against solids and water. It usually appears beside a product model, location and exposure note rather than inside electrical load arithmetic.

The code helps describe one part of equipment context. It does not replace manufacturer instructions, installation requirements or project review for the location.

What the IP digits do and do not cover

An IP code is useful only when the product and location are visible. The first and second digits have different meanings, and the code does not cover every environmental factor.

Australian outdoor and service-area context

IP rating wording often appears in outdoor lighting, service areas, enclosures and equipment schedules. Australian projects may also need product instructions, weather exposure, cleaning conditions, mechanical impact, UV exposure or corrosion context.

This glossary entry does not select equipment. It explains how the IP term should be kept readable in a record.

Using IP ratings

Use the IP ratings table for code structure. Use the outdoor lighting guide when rating context sits inside a project workflow, and keep lighting load or circuit calculations in their own records.
